What is Defend Forward?

Defend Forward is a cyber-competition tabletop exercise (TTX) based on a traditional incident-response model, and adapted for the realities of the cyber world as described by Cyber Persistence Theory. Defend Forward functions to provide both cyber-security and cyber-strategy training while demonstrating the principles of Cyber Persistence Theory. The exercise emulates the constantly competitive nature of cyberspace where the lines between offense and defense are often blurred.

My Role in the TTX

As the sole designer of the exercise I was responsible for the creation of the game cards, card imagery, scenario cards, booklets, and tokens. The text content of the game was created by teams at CCSP who generated the content as I worked and met directly with them.

*Disclaimer*

Some of the contents of this project is replaced with filler text or unavailable for me to share for security reasons.

I produced 73 different playing cards for this project.

The card types include:

Action cards represent cyber strategies used to gain advantage over other cyber actors.

Actor cards represent the various cyber actors that roam cyberspace.

Result cards are used to inform players if their actions were successful or not.

All card images were produced using Playground.ai

This challenged me to improve my AI prompt writing skills to get exact results.

My goal was to create personified versions of the cyber strategies and actions used in cyber space.

When approaching the designs I wanted
to have a strong technological theme that was serious, as cyber security is, but also had science-fictional undertones because it is still a card game.

The booklets created include:

Player guide - contains information for players on how to correctly play Defend Forward.

Moderator guide - contains information for the moderator of the game on how to correctly play through different scenarios.

Scenario Booklet - contains key information
for each scenario that the group can play through like player count, cyber actors used,
and background information on the scenario.

I also produced multiple guide booklets
